28 October 2024 Another sad message, this from Norman Layne.

Sad to advise that Rod Irving passed away on Sunday 20th October, after a lengthy illness.

Rod was firstly a pupil at SEC in the 1950's and very early 60's. In 1960's returned as a member of staff in September 1965. Rod taught Spanish and coached various Rugby teams with unique style and wit, as befit's a man who at the time was also the captain of Liverpool RUFC (before they became Liverpool St Helens), whilst additionally representing Lancashire on numerous occasions. In later years he served as Headmaster at St Cuthbert's secondary school in St Helens.

Rod's funeral is at 12 noon on Friday 15th November, at Bishop Eton RC Church, Woolton Road, Liverpool L16 8NQ.
followed by a 1-30pm service at Springwood Crematorium.

22 October 2024 Update to Reunions in that Alpha Class of 1967-74 had a 50 year reunion at the Railway Inn in Tithebarn Street.

The funeral of Richard ‘Dickie’ Corrigan, OE from 1964/1971 is on Friday 14th June 2024, 1pm at Our Lady of Walsingham church,
Netherton, followed by Thornton Crematorium at 2.15pm, then the wake at Aintree Conservative Club.
All OE’s of Dickie’s vintage are warmly invited to attend and say farewell to a unique old schoolmate.

Rev Brother A.I. Chincotta RIP

Rev Brother A.I. Chincotta, a former headmaster (he succeeded Br Ryan, who of course came just after Bro Coffey).
Br Chincotta died peacefully in a nursing home in Cheshire on 17/11/2023, and his requiem funeral was held in Bowdon on 14/12/2023.

Regret to advise the very recent death of my old schoolmate Richard 'Dickie' Corrigan on 17th May 2024
Dickie attended SEC from September 1964 thru July 1971, and was well known and liked by so many of that vintage.
There are no funeral details as yet, as we await the post-mortem results.
Sadly, Dickie was a widower for the past 15 years or so, and is now survived solely by his son Edward and two fine Grandchildren.

May he rest in peace.

Third message from Norman is an advert for an Old Edwardian of 1964-71 vintage, Kevin McKee.

Kevin has just had his first novella published by Amazon, no less!
The book is a semi fantasy/semi mystery entitled 'All The Luck'
It is set in pre and post-pandemic London, and consisting of 180 well written and truly entertaining pages, with numerous twists and turns that kept me reading from start to finish in just one rainy afternoon!

It's only available on Amazon, whilst there's a Kindle version also, for those who like their literature in tablet form.
As a new author, Kev could do with some support from the OE fraternity, and would especially appreciate all positive reviews from readers who may care to leave their comments on the Amazon website.

10 April Jim Kirby update.

Images from Ciaran, Jim Kirby's son. and also attached a picture of a sketch that one of his grandchildren made using the words of You’ll Never Walk Alone 2 April 2024 Jim Kirby RIP Message via Peter O'Hare. Jim was J.A. Kirby, known to us at St.Edwards as Jim, and was called Tony by his family. He died Tuesday, 2nd April, just short of his 85th birthday, 5 April Update from his son Ciaran Jim's DOB 08/04/1939, and survived by his widow, Breda and family. His funeral was held today April 5th. Jim Kirby cropped from 1951 school photo.

Funeral will be at St Aloysius, Twig Lane, Huyton L36 2LF on Tues 20th Feb 11.15am

followed by cremation at Anfield Crem, then back to St Aloysius club.

Jimmy went right through St Eds from Miss Wilson's in Runnymede on to 2A in 1953 to VI A Science in 1960.

A good little footballer was Jimmy.

He was one of the regulars at the October re-unions.

Note from Michael Deveraux "Sorry to announce bad news that Mike Dooling passed away last night (12th). Mike was a stalwart of British Athletics and very much on local school X/C as well as Senior Races notably in Sefton Park for qualifying events for European teams. I had the pleasure of working with Mike for many years helping our Cafod Event, and it was only at last night's meeting we were drawing up a list of guests for this year's 40th anniversary and Mike Dooling name was to be added to the list. We at Penny Lane Striders would like to send our condolences to his family.

14 June 2023 Sad note from Peter O'Hare that Mike Dooling MBE died 12th June 2023. He was born on the 14th May 1949 however known to many older Edwardians. This below gives some detail of his athletic skills.

Having been a loyal member of his Club, Liverpool Harriers and Athletic Club, for over 45 years, representing the Club on the track, road and country, Mike's biggest impact on the sport lies in his involvement with the English Schools, and in 2009 he became their Chairman. Born on the 14th May 1949, and brought up off Rice Lane, Walton, he attended Blessed Sacrament RC Juniors.

While starting running as far back as he could remember, it was when he furthered his education at St Edwards College in West Derby that he started serious athletics. He started competing on the track and over the country for the school, and joined the Club in October 1963. Though not very naturally talented as a runner, he worked hard to improve. As the saying goes: "what you put in, you get out". Like many youngsters in the Club, he was influenced by Tom O’Mahoney and was in many of his training groups. His early experiences gave him an insight into organising in the sport, which came in handy later in his life when he was a teacher at a Huyton school where there was lack of athletic expertise. After starting at cross-country, he developed on to his favourite event, road racing, with best times of 24mins 15secs for 5 mile, 51mins 10secs for 10 mile, 68mins 10secs for the ½ marathon, and 2hrs 26mins 15secs in the Manchester Piccadilly marathon. On the track he achieved personal bests of 4mins 10secs for 1,500m, 15mins 19secs for 5,000m, and 32mins 16secs for 10,000m. The photo shows him tucked behind Peter Carey in a Northern League 5000m at Kirkby, probably in the 1970s.(WHEN I CAN GET A COPY - Ed) He was away at Training College for 3 years, where again he got himself involved in the track and cross-country. On his return he took up a teaching appointment in Kirkby. It was then that he joined the Club’s elite training squad with John Woods, Frank Davies, and Geoff Smith, to name a few, and reached a good level. He was training 60-70 miles a week, and was in the top 10% in most cross-country races as well as winning a few local road races. Mike was to experience a number of Club team triumphs, and among his other highlights was clocking 2hrs 35mins in the first London Marathon in 1981. Alongside his teaching and his running, Mike found time to attain a BA (Hons) degree in Education at Liverpool University, after a three year part-time study. Having already acquired coaching and administration skills, at school and training college, it was while training with the Club at Kirkby Stadium back in 1971 that he got involved with the Catholic Schools athletics organisation. He progressed to form the Knowsley Schools Athletic Association, naturally moving into Merseyside Schools. The busy athletic official has been involved in many roles within the sport, locally, County and nationally, but has not neglected his roots. He ran the Club’s North of England teams, and been part of the Club administration for over 25 years. Mike's English Schools commitments started back in 1981, when he was assistant secretary of the English Schools at Kirkby, and in the same year was elected to the English Schools Executive Committee, and the following year became Assistant Meeting Manager for the ESAA Annual Athletic Championships. Having been the ESAA Team Manager for over 25 years, he was elected Vice-Chairman of the ESAA in 2008. The top honour arrived in 2009, when he was appointed Chairman - a move which meant retiring from teaching after 38 years.

Over the years he has travelled the country with his duties at the English Schools Championships, and has attended five World Schools Cross-Country Championships in Beijing, Latvia, France, Italy, and the Czech Republic. Among his highlights of his long career in the sport has to be English Team Manager at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Edinburgh in 2002, and officiating at the Manchester Commonwealth Games in the same year. Also high on the list would be his involvement in the World and European Indoors in Birmingham. Mike is married to Eryl. They have two sons, Gareth and Matthew, and live in Rainhill. Mike is a regular at the clubhouse, where he is now putting his efforts into the development of the junior end of the membership which, as he rightly says, is the future of Liverpool Harriers. He claims that he likes to spend his spare time on walking, music, and collecting stamps - but it is hard to see how this busy guy has any spare time at all! From John

Hi Ed Great to hear from you unfortunately very sad circumstances that have brought us here. Yes I was still very much in contact with Mike, we walked every week (no more running) his passing was very surprising although he was not in the best of health he was still active. I think I have the photo you are referring to, Bob Azurdia ? I think is with us. Thanks again for reaching out.

He ran for and later in life was president of Liverpool Harriers and Athletic Club. He was recognised in the honours list for services to athletics(MBE). He carried the torch on a stage for the London Olympics. Was well known in the North West for the unselfish work he did in athletics.

TOM HACKETT 19 February 2023 update - Obit from John Hackett, Tom's son and kindly sent to me for our Notice Board.

Tom was born in St Helens on 4/12/1928. He attended West Park Grammar, where he captained the rugby & cricket 1st teams. In 1946, aged 17, he went to St Mary's Training College, Twickenham, after which, in 1948 he did National Service in the army, where he played rugby, cricket, basket-ball and even boxing. He continued his studies at Carnegie PE College in Leeds, gaining a distinction in gymnastics. In the 50's he played for Liverpool Rugby Union Club (alongside Wilf Murphy, a well-known St Edward's OB). Tom & Wilf often got good write-ups in the Liverpool Echo. Tom also got 10 Lancashire caps in the 50's, and was Lancashire’s 440yds champion for a while. He continued playing sport well into his 40's.

Tom taught at St Edward's from 1954-64, during which time he attended evening classes, leading to a B. Sc. in Economics. In 1964, he moved to Mater Misericordiae (now Maricourt Comprehensive), then onto I.M. Marsh training College, lecturing in Education. In the mid-70's, Tom was appointed Deputy Head of Cardinal Allen's School in West Derby, teaching maths and economics - and introduced rugby to the sports curriculum.

Tom & his wife, Cecilia took early retirement in 1983, and moved to the Lake District, where Tom developed a keen interest Amateur Operatics, and ended up as a lead singer in many productions.

In retirement, Tom was persuaded to take up temporary teaching at Sedburgh School & Witherstack Approved School where he revived school sports.

Tom passed away peacefully, aged 94, on 6th Jan 2023, survived by his wife of 67 years, Cecilia, 4 children, 7 grandchildren & 3 great grandchildren.

I have since found, with the help of Charles Cuckson, the Requiem Mass was at Holy Trinity and St George Church Kendal.

Notice - HACKETT Tom Passed away peacefully at home on 6th January 2023 aged 94 years. Devoted and loving husband of Cecilia, and father of Sarah, Matthew, Michael and John. Tom will be fondly remembered for his many leading roles in plays and musicals with Kendal Operatic Society, Staveley Roundhouse and The Brewery Arts Theatre Company; and for his sporting prowess in many fields especially athletics and rugby union. A Requiem Mass will be offered for Tom at Holy Trinity & St George Catholic Church, Kendal at 12.30 on 8th February.

Tom Hackett took over from Martin Regan and Tom was appointed to the staff on 1 September 1954.

Hello Ed

I have fond recollections of Tom Hackett, and four specific occasions spring to mind.

I was studying the A Level mock results and he stopped and advised,"If you don't do better than that laddie, you'll end up as a PE teacher like me.

I ended up as a PE teacher, but far below the standard set by Tom. He allowed me to practise goalkeeping during PE lessons. A brave decision at a rugby school but I played for Old Caths at the time.

He turned up at Dovecot Baths during the school holidays, on his moped, so that he could register my swimming ability for a job application.

Finally he made me welcome at his home in Parbold many years later.

He and his wife Cecilia did wonderful pro-life work for SPUC.

A model teacher who knew his pupils, I was so pleased that he was able to enjoy retirement in the Lakes.

Wilfred "Wilf" James Murphy RIP 16 January 2023

Wilf was a lecturer at (now) Liverpool John Moore University. He was very well known in education circles and one of his claims to fame was his playing rugby until he was 60

He will be greatly missed by his wife Margaret, and all the children grandchildren and great grand-children.

Message from one of Wilf's year group Peter Tennyson.

I am deeply sorry to read about the death of Wilf Murphy. He was a giant in our class and on the rugby field. I remember how he and Bob Azurdia used to get stuck in the second row when I played scrum half. He was the first to commiserate with me when I got sent off by Brother O'Brien who was the referee. The last time I saw him was in Church Street when he was working in Radio Merseyside with Bob just after I had completed my National Service and we had a chat about our days at St Edwards. In class he was always amiable and had an easy smile on his face. To me I looked up to him and he is the end of era. Please kindly pass on my condolences to his wife Margaret, children and the rest of his family. I will light a candle for him. RIP.

Hi Ed, I rang just before Christmas to tell you that Barney had died on the Thursday morning. Barbara told me that Barney had been ill.

UPDATE 3 January 2023 Hi Ed, I spoke to Barbara Davis yesterday.

Barney's funeral is Friday Jan. 13th 2.30 p.m. at Holy Family Church, Mackets Lane L25 8TG.

His cremation will follow at Springwood Crematorium at 3.30 p.m. L25 7UN and then on to Allerton Hall, effectively next door, same post code.

5 September 2022. This evening I had a message from Michael Collins' son that Mike had passed away surrounded by his family on the 18th August 2022.

Michael Paul Keith Collins RIP born 15 April 1939 and died 18 August 2022.

Michael Paul Keith Collins was born in Prescot, then Lancashire, in April 1939 as part of a large extended family with deep Irish immigrant roots. He was a bright boy, and lucky to be part of that post-war generation that saw better education opportunities for working class kids, but he made the most of that luck, passing his 11+ and earning a scholarship to St Edwards. He thrived at St Edwards, excelling academically and on the sports field - particularly on the rugby field, emerging as a top talent and playing representative Rugby Union for Liverpool Senior Schoolboys and Lancashire Schoolboys.

He then went on to Liverpool University, the first to do so from the family, where he studied Law and continued with what was becoming a serious rugby career, at this time playing representative rugby for English Universities and Lancashire. He was also approached by St Helens Rugby League club to sign professional terms, but declined that offer.

Mike then joined the RAF, a time when he hit the peak of his rugby career, starring for London Irish (where he was player of the year in 1965), and earning a trial call up for the Ireland national side, only to miss out on that opportunity with a broken collar bone.

After leaving the RAF, he was early into the world of Management Consultancy, and this was to be his main career for the next 30yrs.

Mike was a man of many passions - he loved music, poetry, literature and paintings, and indulged all of these as an active member of the Chelsea Arts Club. As Oscar Wilde once wrote "Be yourself; everyone else is already taken", and Mike surely did that, he was an original who embraced his life, enjoyed it and packed so much in to it.

He passed peacefully on 18th August at home in Warborough, Oxfordshire surrounded by his four children, Clare, Siobhan, Gabrielle and Damian who read out the Eulogy.

One of the most visible and influential figures on the international school stage for more than two decades prior to his retirement in 2004.
T. Michael (“Mike”) Maybury died at age 81 on January 13, 2020.
After several hospital stays, he passed away peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by family members, at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth.

A long-serving Executive Secretary of the European Council of International Schools (ECIS), he led schools on three continents and made significant contributions to the development of the International Baccalaureate (IB).

Mike Maybury was born in Liverpool on October 15, 1938. The eldest of four, he attended a primary school once headed by his mother, and her mother before her, so teaching was in his blood.
After secondary school at St Edward’s College, Liverpool, he studied at St Mary’s College, Twickenham, and began his career teaching mathematics and PE.
He completed a BSc degree in mathematics and computer science at Liverpool University before taking head of department and senior teacher roles nearby.

AISA Remembers Mike Maybury

Mike Maybury was a force of personality who played an important role in the development of the Association of International Schools in Africa.
He first came to the International School of Tanganyika in August, 1979, knowing nothing about the organization, but soon understood its importance in supporting teachers and administrators working in difficult circumstances. By the time he attended his first conference in 1980, he was already contributing his ideas and suggestions for strengthening conferences and other AISA activities.

In 1980, he was elected to the AISA board, where he supported such new initiatives as the hiring of a part time Executive Director.


In 1981, he was elected president of the AISA board, the first non-American to hold the position.

He continued his work with the board in setting out more visionary plans for the future, particularly in developing conferences on both sides of the continent to enable more people to attend and benefit from the training provided. AISA is fortunate to have benefitted from Mike Maybury’s support during its formative years. While he served for a relatively brief moment in time, he nevertheless exerted his energy and considerable leadership capabilities to improve the organization and help set its priorities for the future. Mike recently contributed his thoughts about AISA for the History of AISA book, demonstrating his continuing interest in the organization, even after these more than 30 years since he left Africa. He is remembered by those who knew him as a driving force, a visionary leader and a jovial colleague. To have known him is truly to never forget him. AISA extends its condolences to his wife, Heather and to the Maybury family during this time of loss.

(Click photo below to enlarge.) 2 July 2022 This notice appeared in the local press that I have just found.                       JOHN MICHAEL BOON         MONDAY JUNE 27th 2022 John Michael Boon died peacefully yesterday, 27th, surrounded by his family at the age of 82. Husband to his beautiful wife Jeanette, Father to Fiona (Dan), John (Shelley), and Andrew (Vicki). Grandfather to Evelyn, Ella, Sadie, Ian, Gavin, and Sam. Neighbour to Tim. As Monty Python once said, he has kicked the bucket, He’s passed on! He has ceased to be! He’s expired and gone to meet his maker! Bereft of life, he rests in peace… But what a life.what a legend… Born an Evertonian in 1939 in the city of Liverpool, John’s birth was rumoured to have been the reason for the second world war. Truly though, his life was spent providing joy, kindness and laughter to others. John had a passion for education and helping others. After receiving his teaching certification, he took a much larger version of that Ferry across the Mersey and landed in Canada. He met a smart, beautiful and no-nonsense Scot named Jeannette and they have been married since 1967. John and Jeanette adored and loved each other deeply. They lay claim to being Welland’s greatest power couple. After working in Toronto as a teacher, the Niagara Region beckoned and he graced Welland with his presence for the last 48 years. John worked with the Lincoln County Board of Education as a classroom teacher, special education teacher, and special education consultant. His commitment and dedication to his students had a lasting impact that is felt to this day. Once retired, “Grandad” enjoyed his time with 6 incredible grandchildren and was certainly the greatest entertainer for all of them. If you knew John, you knew he was the life of the party. His laugh was contagious and his sense of humour was almost impossible to match. He maintained that humour in spite of his illness. During a difficult conversation about funeral homes and visitations, John was asked about open or closed casket. He replied simply that he would like to be sitting up. “I want to make it as uncomfortable as possible for everyone” he would joke. John loved playing the guitar and if you were lucky to hear him sing House of the Rising Sun, you understand you were witnessing an epic moment. John loved his football and that meant really only one word…Everton. Their club motto Nil Satis Nisi Optimum (“Nothing but the best is good enough”) is a Latin phrase that exemplifies how John approached treating and helping others. John took his love of football and coached within the Welland Soccer Club for many years. He might be the only coach to teach and execute the offside trap to 9 year olds…such was his joy of the game. John was a faith filled husband, father, and grandfather who loved, and was deeply loved. His life will continue to serve as an example to us all. Following his wishes, there will not be a service, but a celebration of life in the near future. He will be greatly missed, but our tears will turn to laughter when we think of John and his legacy of kindness, laughter, and humour. He was on a trip to Poland with his son, Christopher, meeting up with Chris's prospective In-laws.
Our thoughts are with his wife, Kathy, and family at this sad time.

Ron was born in 1942 in Wales - his mother was evacuated to avoid the bombs.
Attended St John's Primary, Kirkdale & St Ed's 53-60.
With his 'A' Levels he work as an analytical chemist in the city centre before moving to the Bootle Tin Works.
In the early 70's he went to Byrom St Coll of Science & Technology (still a 'Poly' then) and studied to become a Member of the Royal Institute of Chemists.
That qualification, the equivalent of a degree, enabled him to become a chemistry lecturer at Mabel Fletcher College, which changed and moved over the years, ending up as Lpool Central College in Clarence St.
He retired about 2010 in his late 60's. He was a very knowledgeable railway enthusiast and CAMRA real ale fan.
No funeral arrangements, yet, as his body is still in Poland.

Dear Ed, please let the C.I.Edwardian Association know that my best and oldest friend (of 75+years' standing), Tony Devine, passed away on Tuesday, August 3rd, 2021, aged 78.

Tony's funeral will be held at St. Gregory's, Liverpool Road, Lydiate, at 1300. hours on Monday, August 16th, 2021.

"A Tribute to Tony Devine (including many reminiscences of Tony Devine and myself)"

Tony Devine, born 21/5/43, passed away 3/8/21.

Tony was my dearest and oldest friend(of 75+years' standing). He was like"a brother from another mother"to me. We first got to know each other in the mid-1940s because we both lived in the same street, Evered Avenue, Walton. Tony and I played, together with friends of our own age, in a beautiful park close to our houses (Walton Recreational Ground), known fondly as "The Rec". In summer, we played cricket, or tried(!) to do athletics by jumping over waist-high privet hedges, or we sometimes played a so-called, make-believe fighting game, called "Japs and Commandos", as WWII had only just finished, remember? Alternatively, we would go and play on the swings or the "monkey ladders"(remember them?),which were also located in the park.

In winter, football was the order of the day, with temporarily discarded pullovers or jackets placed on the floor as "goal-posts". Those were the days! It was a really idyllic childhood! Tony and I often went to the "Walton Vale Cinema"(long since demolished) on a Saturday, to watch what was on offer, usually films with Abbott and Costello, the serial called"White Eagle", or Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. Often when the show was over, we would race all the way home (no mean feat, as home was about one and a half to two miles away!), pretending to be our heroes on horseback, with our coats fastened to our necks and dangling down our backs, streaming out behind us, intended to look like capes or cloaks!

Regarding education, our paths often coincided. The first establishment we attended together was "Miss Duke's Nursery School"in Walton Park, from the age of three onwards. Tony used to say to me:" Mike, don't you remember, when we were three, Miss Duke made you stand on a desk for being a naughty boy?! "I couldn't for the life of me remember the incident, but if Tony said it happened, then it did happen! Next, we both went to Blessed Sacrament Primary School, Aintree, now, sadly, demolished to make way for new houses. This was a tremendous school, and helped us both gain admission to St. Edward's together. Here, we both played in rugby teams over several years, and both represented the College at athletics.

Tony opted for the Sciences, whereas I was a Modern Linguist (French and Spanish) so, after "A"level, our paths diverged. However, we were "reunited"when we both started our teaching careers in St. Kevin's Comprehensive, Kirkby (the school attended by Former World Boxing Champion, John Conteh, and the Screenwriter of "Brookside", Phil Redmond). Tony then applied for the Head of the Science Department post at St. Augustine's Comprehensive, Huyton, and was successful in his application. Ironically, in 1970, I became the Head of the Modern Languages Department in St. Augustine's, so our paths crossed once again! (St. Augustine's was the school attended by Peter Reid, one of the greatest Everton players ever!). Later on, Tony then became Deputy Head at a Wigan Comprehensive, whereas I stayed on at St. Augustine's, until I retired in 1992. St. Augustine's was later called "St. Thomas Beckett School ", (as a result of re? organisation).This school has now been demolished, as indeed, St. Kevin's has! (It sometimes seems as though demolition is always hot on my heels!) After my retirement, I went to live in Spain for 27 years.

Mike Azurdia and Gillian Patricia Azurdia RIP - They died within a few days of each other.

Sad news from Adrian and Terry Moorhead received was 2 February.

20 February we received this Message from the family:-

Mum and Dad's funeral will take place at 2.30pm on Monday 1st March 2021 at Saint Michael & All Angels Catholic Church, Wirral.

Followed by a service at 4pm at Landican Crematorium, Wirral.

Unfortunately, due to the current restrictions, we are only allowed to invite 30 people to the church and the chapel, and the vast majority of that number will be taken up by family.

We know that many of you would like to pay your respects on the day, so we have arranged a livestream of both services.

We do hope you will join with us to say your goodbyes to our wonderful parents.

Please also forward this email to anyone you feel would like to pay their respects to Mum and Dad.

As you can imagine, we have found it very difficult to distribute this information to all Mum & Dad's friends and colleagues, without having all the contact details. If you can help us as best you can, to get this information out there, we would be ever so grateful.

Peter Dunn RIP born 31/ 10/ 1944 died 22/ 10/ 2020.

I have received this sad news from Joe Dunn

"On 22 October 2020, My younger brother Peter died last Thursday, on holiday with his wife Carolyn in their holiday home in Spain.
He was cremated in Spain on 28th October 2020."

Peter attended St Edward's from September 1956 till June 1962 and is mentioned in the school magazines a number of times in cross country and rugby team reports.

He joined the Police Service in March 1966 and retired after 30 years in March 1996

15 October 2020 Mike Slemen RIP Michael Anthony Charles Slemen 11 May 1951 – 20 July 2020 Peter Tennyson has forwarded to us information that Mike Slemen former St Edward's pupil who played in cricket first X1 at college. Mike is mentioned in the college magazines in cross country cricket and rugby section reports. He went on to play rugby as an England and British Lions wing player and became Englands most capped wing, collecting 31 caps in the late 1970's and early 1980's. Seán lived in Kilmeena, Westport, Mayo, Ireland with his wife 'Pip' Seán was at St Edwards main school 1950-1958. Seán's funeral took place on 10 March 2020. If I get any more news I will post it here. Daily Telegraph 27 November 2019 Monsignor Cookson RIP who died recently. Monsignor Peter Cookson who was at St Edwards for a short time in the early 1950's left for the priesthood. Neil Sayer comments that the Cathedral Newsletter was taken over by the recent death of Monsignor Cookson. He was Dean here for 17 years and, as a popular priest and administrator, his death has very much affected the parishioners and Cathedral family. This information is in the Cathedral Newsletter "Rest In Peace Mgr Cookson Please pray for the repose of the soul of Monsignor Provost Peter Cookson, who died on Friday 8th November. He was 80 years of age and was in the 57th year of his priesthood." 23 May 2019 Ian Parker RIP Kevin Parr passed on the information that Ian Parker's funeral is at Springwood Crematorium at 10:00am on Tuesday 28th May At Springwood Avenue, Garston, Liverpool L25 7UN. Ian was at St Edwards 1972-79 and was in many Rugby teams and was a trialist for North of England and represented Lancashire and South West Lancashire and was a long serving member of the Old Boys Rugby Team. In 1976 he took part in All England Athletics Championship. I found these photos with Ian in 1976 and 1979 in college magazines that are on line and there are over 20 mentions in these of Ian's sporting activities. 29 July 2018 (updated Catholic Ramblers link 16 Jan 2019) It was in 1968 that a plane crash in Germany took the lives of 8 young girls from Liverpool Catholic Ramblers. 9th August 2018 is the 50th anniversary of this sad event. A group of relatives and friends will be attending a mass followed by a procession to this memorial that was built in the German village near where the crash took place. Local people have been tending the memorial all these years and there are a number of connections to pupils who were at St Edward's. Peter Douglas RIP

"It is with great sadness that I reported the recent death of my cousin, Peter Douglas, formerly a member of the Leesider folk group. Music had been the major driving force behind Peter ever since I can remember. He featured on the trombone in the St Teresa' church band which appears on this web-site along with his time with the Leesiders. My earliest recollection of his debut in front of a live audience was in St Edward's school hall. School concerts in those days (1950s) were generally drab affairs with Fred Boraston conducting the choir and Mr Genin the school orchestra while the soloists were largely playing classical piano or violin pieces. Peter sought to change that and approached Brother Wall, the tall thin ascetic headmaster and enquired if he could play his mouth organ to which, to our amazement, he was given the green light. With some of his class-mates as his backing group, Peter went on stage and gave a rendition of the popular cowboy song, 'Muletrain'. When they finished the boys listening with utter disbelief, erupted in applause and standing up cheering to the rafters. Peter was a happy go lucky guy, who loved teaching music as much as performing. He moved to Sweden after leaving the Leesiders and is survived by his daughter Mary. His two brothers John and David who both attended St Edwards with us, the former lives in Blundellsands and Dave emigrated to Australia nearly 60 years ago. Peter had been in poor health for some time with cancer but collapsed while taking part in his church choir two months ago. After six weeks in hospital and two weeks in a hospice, he passed away with his daughter ever present at his side. He is deeply missed by his family and all who knew him for his warm and affectionate smile". Peter Tennyson. Jim Griffiths next to his friend Denis in the 1955-56 Crosscountry Team A message from Jim Griffiths It was with great sadness that I heard of the death of Denis early this week. He died peacefully at home, after a long illness, in the early hours of Wednesday morning, 17th May 2017, with all his family around him. Denis was a real gentleman, friend, colleague and fellow parishioner at St. Bartholomew's church, Rainhill, where his funeral service will take place next Thursday, 25th May, 2017 at 10am. Always interested in sport (cricket and athletics at St. Edwards) he went on to encourage and fully support, on the touch line, his children and grandchildren in their endeavours on the football pitch wherever it might take them. He will be sadly missed by all within the Rainhill parish community and beyond. God bless you my friend. 5 April 2017 ---- I have had a message from Peter Kilfoyle this evening.


Less than two years ago, twenty Old Edwardians of the 1957 intake met up in Liverpool for a stroll down Memory Lane.
It was so good, we decided to do it again, once more in a hotel in Central Liverpool - a few beers, some nibbles, and lots of tales.
Hopefully, we can contact many more old friends, in the hope that we will get an even better turnout on Saturday, October 7th.

In the early hours of January 5th my father, Geoff Robinson, peacefully passed away, after many years of illness, receiving excellent care both from the home he was in, and from many others - they know who they are.

The funeral will be held in the Rosemary Chapel at Springwood Crematorium, Springwood Avenue, Liverpool L25 7UN on Tuesday 24th January at 2pm. Anyone wishing to pay their respects will be welcome.

Brian Edward Mulroy OBE --May Brian Rest In peace.
Brian sadly passed away on Monday 26 September 2016.

Brian a former Head Teacher at St. Monica's Catholic Primary School, Sefton, Merseyside- was awarded an OBE in the 2001-02 New Years Honours List for services to Education in Sefton.
He left St Edward's in 1960.

Brian's funeral will be held at St. Bartholomew's Church, in St Helen's, L35 6NZ at 11:30 on Thursday 6th October.

I only just found that our teacher from the 1950s and 1960s in Runnymede sadly died last month.
Notice was in the St Helens Star.

In hospital on 1st June, Marie aged 90 years, of Dentons Green.
Sadly missed by all her family and friends.
Requiem Mass will be celebrated in St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, Windleshaw, on Tuesday 14th June, at 11.30 a.m. followed by interment in St. Helens Cemetery.
Family flowers only please, donations if desired to the Alzheimer's Society.

I have had very brief information that John Shelley Died today in Fazackerly Hospital. John was at St Edwards circa 1948-54 and was in many rugby teams. He played for the St Edward's Old Boys in the late 1950's and early 1960's. This small photo taken from one of the Old Boys' team photos.

Died peacefully at the age of 82, surrounded by his family.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Saint Dominic Parish - 2415 Rebecca St., Oakville, ON L6L 2B1, on May 14th at 10:30 a.m.

Laurence attended St Edwards in 1940's and left in 1950. Had recently been living in Canada. Larry came to our Annual Dinner in 2009.

Following the success of our Purple Evenings at Christmas time, the College is launching our first Purple Day on Saturday 11 July 2015.
The format of the day is as follows:

Then after a quick trip home to get spruced up it is back to the College for the Old Edwardians' Dinner:

Whether you left the College four or forty years ago, the Dinner is the ideal occasion to reunite with former classmates and friends. Tickets cost £20 and can be purchased online by clicking here

Paul Francis Dobson RIP 1940-2014
A belated notification.
DOBSON - PAUL, October 30, 2014. At East Cheshire Hospice, formerly of Brookdale Road, Liverpool 15, St. Clare's Parish.
St. Edward's old boy, survived by wife Teresa, three Children, sister Bernadette and brother Peter.
Paul who was born 22 January 1940 was at the college with the 1951-56 group in the senior school for a very short time having been in Runnymede from September 1948. However Paul left to join the Redemptorist Order at their junior house at Erdington Abbey in Birmingham. At the age of 18 went to study for priesthood at the novitiate in Perth but may have only stayed for one year. He then took up a career in banking. Later married Teresa at St Francis of Assisi, Garston in 1965. ( Not Bishop Eton as in Catenian article). They had two daughters and a son.
Paul was a committed member of the Catenians in Knutsford were in 1980 he became Vice President and their President in 1981.
An expanded history of Paul's life is published in the March edition the Catenian shown below. His Requiem Mass at St Vincent's Knutsford was filled to capacity.

May he rest in peace.

Just had information that former teacher from mid-1950's to mid 1960's has died recently.
Very little information at this time but will update as soon as more details are passed to me.

Shaun Tighe 1960-2015

Message received via Emma Quayle at St Edwards

An OE, Shaun Tighe, has recently passed away and the family would like to post this on your notice board as well as on the College website.

Shaun Tighe

Shaun was a pupil at Runnymede between 1965 and 1969 before joining the College in 1970 to 1975. Shaun followed in the footsteps of his brother, and former Head Boy, Tony Tighe. Shaun had lived in Tenerife for the last 22 years and ran a very successful business there before the onset of multiple sclerosis. Sadly, he died on 2 January 2015, aged 55 after some years of illness. He will be missed by all those who knew him.

Yesterday, a funeral service was held for Shaun at the local Catholic church in Tenerife (I don't have the name, I'm sorry). This was attended by Shaun's family. Today (9th January) the family will return Shaun's ashes to the UK.
Shaun was an Everton fanatic and such is the affinity of the family to the club that they have planned a memorial service at St. Luke's Church, on Goodison Road, L4 4EL, Friday 16 January at 3pm. This will be followed by a reception at The Brian Labone Suite at Goodison Park. The family has made it clear that they would welcome, to these events, any friends and Old Edwardians who knew Shaun.
The family have requested that there are no flowers but have invited attendees to donate to MS Research in memory of Shaun.

Message from the Communications Manager
Dear Old Edwardian,
On behalf of the Principal, I would like to invite you to hear renowned academic and Old Edwardian, Professor Jim Staunton FRS (OE 1946-53) deliver this years Roche Society Lecture, entitled Creating New Antibiotics: A Frankenstein Approach on Wednesday 28 January at 14.15, in the College Hall.

Professor Staunton is emeritus professor of Chemistry at St Johns College, Cambridge and has held several posts at the University; including acting as Dean of the College and as Director of Studies in Natural Science. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1998 and has received several awards and prizes including the Tilden, Natural Products and Robert Robinson medals from the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Most recently, Professor Staunton has forged a career in industry, engaging in applied research into antibiotics and other medical compounds through two spin-off companies exploiting research discoveries made at the University.

This will be the sixth lecture in the Roche Society Lecture series, which aims to provide pupils and friends of the College with the opportunity to hear nationally and internationally renowned individuals speak about subjects or issues which they have a passion for. Previous speakers have also been Old Edwardians - Sir Terry Leahy, former Chief Executive of Tesco; Professor Vincent Gillespie, JRR Tolkien professor of English at Oxford; Professor Martin Birchall, professor of Laryngology at the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital; Dr Stephen Baxter, science fiction author; and Professor Paul Preston, leading biographer of Franco and specialist in Spanish history at the London School of Economics.

We have just been informed by Norman Layne that former St Edward's pupil and prefect the Very REV Canon William (Fr Bill) Redmond who taught at Ushaw College and served as Parish Priest in Widnes and Warrington died on Saturday 6 December at the age of 65 having served the archdiocese as a priest for 39 years. He was much loved brother to Anthony who was Head Boy in 1964-65, brother in law of Ann, uncle of Michael and Nicholas, great-uncle of Hayden, and beloved pastor to the people of his parish. He will be widely missed.

William George Joseph Redmond was born in Maghull on 3 June 1949, the son of William and Mary Redmond. He was educated at St Monica's School, Bootle, and St Edward's College, Liverpool, before studying at Oriel College, Oxford. After graduation he began his studies for the priesthood at St Joseph's College, Upholland and was ordained priest at St Monica's, Bootle, on 19 July 1975.

Following ordination he was sent for further studies at the Biblicum in Rome and was awarded a licentiate in Sacred Scripture. Upon his return to the archdiocese he was appointed as assistant to Monsignor Thomas Adamson at St Clare's, Liverpool, in September 1979. However, very soon his postgraduate studies were put to use with his appointment to the staff at Ushaw College, where he taught Sacred Scripture between September 1981 and February 1990. In February 1990 he was appointed parish priest of St Paul of the Cross, Burtonwood. After more than ten years in Burtonwood he became parish priest of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, Hough Green, in September 2000. In addition to his appointment at Our Lady's, he became parish priest of St Michael's, Ditton, in July 2008. His final appointment was as parish priest of St Oswald's, Padgate, in September 2011. He remained at St Oswald's following his retirement in September last year, but this latter period was marked by increasingly poor health.

In March 2009 he was appointed Canon Theologian of the Metropolitan Cathedral Chapter and also served on the Ecumenism Commission of the archdiocese. His body was received into St Oswald's, Padgate, on Thursday 18 December at 7.30 pm when Mass was celebrated.

His Funeral Mass was led by Archbishop Malcolm Patrick McMahon and the Most Rev P A Kelly, Archbishop Emeritus, at St Oswald's on Friday 19 December at 12.00 noon, followed by interment at Yewtree Cemetery, Liverpool.

My name is Peter Jordan OE 1939-46 and wonder if any more of my vintage are out there.

My first HM was Brother McNamara but soon succeeded by Bro. Wall.
In 1947 I joined British Enka and in 1950 was awarded a British Rayon Research Association Scholarship to Manchester University.
In 1954 I joined Farbenfabriken Bayer (now Bayer AG) and served 36 years with them.

I wonder if Ricky Edge, John Wilkinson Leo Gould and Bev Ahearne are still around.

Jim Doran RIP

Some sad news Jim Doran passed away last Monday 10th November after a short illness. His requiem mass is next Thursday 20th November at 10am at the Church of the Good Shepherd Torrisholme near Lancaster. Martin Regan RIP

Sad news of the death of Martin Regan, former teacher at St Edward's College and later at St Anselm's College.

Martin's first teaching job was at St Edward's and went on to work outside teaching but then went to St Anselms for many years. Martin was capped by England twelve times between 1953 and 1956 after which he left the Liverpool club to play Rugby League for Warrington. Martin (85) was a most remarkably passionate and inspiring coach and teacher at St. Anselm's College. He had the true patience of a saint and was liked by all, he was instrumental in the remarkable development of College rugby. He oversaw an incredible period of success, producing numerous international players. He will be sadly missed but his legacy as a man and an educator lives on. He truly epitomised the values of St Anselm and Blessed Edmund Rice and his sportsmanship and honesty will never be forgotten.

May He Rest in Peace

A tribute to leading Liverpool solicitor Paul Rooney


Last month prominent Liverpool solicitor Paul Rooney sadly passed away following a long illness. Paul studied law at Sheffield University before being admitted as a solicitor in 1970. He founded the Paul Rooney Partnership in Liverpool over 30 years ago and owned the firm until it was acquired by Manchester based personal injury firm Antony Hodari in September 2012, becoming Paul Rooney Legal. The sale of the firm didnt mean retirement for Paul though and he continued to work for the firm providing consultation on direct marketing. It was in the field of legal marketing that Paul Rooney made his name; pioneering extensive radio advertising campaigns, which until his contribution had not been heavily used by the industry. He coined the phrase, slip trip or fall; call Paul for the firms radio ads. It is a testament to the quality of the catchphrase and to his radio advertising strategy that the phrase is still used, particularly in Liverpool. The firm remains true to the catchphrase and retains a slip, trip and fall compensation claims specialism. Under Pauls leadership the Paul Rooney Partnership became one of the most well-known personal injury brands in the country. Speaking of her late colleague solicitor at the firm, Caroline Sergeant has said, he worked hard to make the firm the best it could possibly be in Liverpool. He enjoyed the marketing side and promoting the business. Unafraid to try controversial marketing tactics the firm has attracted attention in the past for offering incentives such as shopping vouchers or cash to persons encouraging personal injury claimants to contact them. Such tactics have in recent years been criticised as fuelling a compensation culture in the UK and have been done away with by the Jackson Reforms of April 2013. However cynically some firms carried out ambulance chasing tactics the aim of Paul Rooney was justice; we dont think its fair that you should pay for someone elses mistakes epitomises the firms approach. Paul instilled in the firm a deep commitment to its clients remembers Caroline Sergeant, he was also very particular about the way we dealt with clients and to help them as much as we could. Pauls commitment to justice was a motivating factor in him merging with Antony Hodari, which was also in part a result of the Jackson reforms. Speaking of the merger Paul said, it will become harder for injured people to bring claims from next year and they will need firms with the resources of an Antony Hodari to take on their cases and fight for their rights. Paul was as dedicated to his staff as he was to getting justice for his clients. The merger with Antony Hodari went through without any redundancies, with all 50 staff remaining in their roles. Commenting on the team spirit his fostered at the firm Caroline has commented that, all his staff were all very loyal as once you went to work for him, you thought youd found your home. It was like working for a family, adding, he wanted us all to be happy because he knew happy staff work harder. Paul was a proud Liverpudlian and an avid Liverpool FC supporter, speaking of the merger firm's merger he said that, its also good for Liverpool as it means a highly resourced firm will still be based here. The Paul Rooney Partnership was hugely supportive of the families of the victims of the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 and represented a number of them in the Public enquiry. Stewart McCulloch of Liverpool Law Society summed up the thoughts of many at Paul's passing, Paul was a very prominent, industrious member of the legal profession in Liverpool. He was a big character and will be sorely missed. Our thoughts go to Pauls wife, Sue and their two sons.

DINNER TIME! 2014

Just received from Emma at the college.

"On behalf of the College and the Catholic Institute Edwardian Association, I invite you to attend the Old Edwardians Dinner, which will take place on Friday 17 October 2014 at the College. This popular event is held each year on a Friday close to the Feast of St Edward (13 October).
The ticket price includes a drinks reception in the College Hall and a delicious four course meal. Ticket prices are: Standard Ticket - #30, Under 25 Ticket - #25, Table of ten - #270 (buy nine get one free) and can be purchased online. Alternatively, please contact me on the details below for other ways to pay. Tables are available for a maximum of ten people and smaller groups or couples will be seated together. Tickets will be sold on a first come first served basis and are non-refundable.

If you would like some help in organising reunion tables please do contact me and I will do my best to be of assistance.

Tony was a pupil 1941 to 1948 and his funeral was concelebrated by Bishop Vincent Malone and Father Vincent from Holy Family Church.
Tony for 20 years had been chairman of Friends of the Cathedral.

A happy reunion after about 56 years with a little help from our web pages.....

Dear Friends,
I left St. Edward's in the summer of 1957. So did Paul Carrier. So in 1957 we went our separate ways, ne'er to meet again. However an article, with photos, on e-mail recounting an SEC anniversary dinner a couple of years ago meant that I got in touch with Paul. I live in northern France, little more than an hour's drive from Calais. Quite recently Paul mentioned that he was going through France to see his daughter. Learning that, on his way back, he would be taking the Channel tunnel I managed to persuade him to stop overnight and, as you can imagine, we had a good old chinwag. If my maths are correct, that means that we met up again after 56 years, THANKS TO YOU; Please accept my deepest gratitude.

Belated news of John McCann RIP (OE 1952-57) via his sister Sue prompted by checking our BigPicture photo 1956.
I found this information -Widnes Rugby Union Football Club released this news "It is with great sadness that we report the passing away of John McCann, this evening (Friday 26th November 2010) in hospital. Our thoughts are with Jenny and the family at this sad time.
Born in February 1941, John was educated at St Marie’s and St Edward’s schools. He played at St Edward’s Old Boys before being converted to the Wids by Brian Higgins."

Today 23rd May.
Richard Byrne(1961-1966), a great rugby player and athlete for the school, unfortunately died from Cancer.
After leaving the school in 1966 he became a stalwart of the sports section of the Old Boys for many years captaining both rugby and football teams.
He moved to Yorkshire to look after family members and settled in Huddersfield where he also flourished in golf.

May he rest in peace.

Lawrence Montagu O.E. (1958-65)

It is with great regret I have to inform you of the death, after a long illness, of Lawrence (Lol) Montagu O.E. (1958-65).

An outstanding sportsman at school, Lawrence captained the First XI at cricket, played for the First XV and First XI for three years. He entered teaching and devoted the whole of his career to Catholic education, becoming one of the youngest head teachers in the country when he was appointed to St Peter's High School in Gloucester, which he guided for nearly 30 years. It is now one of the leading Roman Catholic comprehensive schools in the country.
In recognition of his services to education, which saw him serve on numerous national committees, he was awarded an OBE in 2001. Lawrence will be laid to rest after a requiem mass at Gloucester Cathedral on Friday, 19th April at 1pm.

Our sincere condolences to his wife Isobel and his sons Paul and Kieran.

May he rest in peace

Message from James Blackburne.
Dear, Edward.
I learned that my cousin, Richard Blackburne, who was an old boy of St Edward's also, has passed away. It was a peaceful departure at home, with his wife. A service will take place at Bishop Eaton's, Dec 12th 2012, at 12:00.
His health had deteriorated over the preceding year. He will be remembered with great affection, as a true gentleman.

Former college student Gerry Hale has died.
Gerry won a scholarship to St Edwards at age of 11 back in 1950's and during his time at the college he excelled in rugby, athletics, cricket and tennis.
He studied economics at Liverpool University where he formed his own group Gerry de Ville and the City Kings in 1962.

Dear friends and family,
It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that Tony died peacefully at 3pm on Thursday, 23rd August.
Some of you will already know this but for those of you who have not yet heard, I apologise if this has come as rather a shock. He fought hard against his illness for eighteen months, and we have been able to have some wonderfully happy times. The funeral is to be held on Thursday 6th September and I have included details below for anyone who wishes to attend, you are of course very welcome.

The Requiem Mass will be held at 3.00pm, Thursday 6th September at Holy Ghost Church, New Wokingham Road, Crowthorne. Parking at Holy Ghost is limited so please consider car sharing where you can. The family will hold a private service at the crematorium following Mass, and will then go on to Cantley House Hotel in Wokingham (RG40 5QG) for a celebration of Tony's life.

Anthony R Azurdia 1940-2012

Message from Terry Duffy
I heard yesterday evening (23rd August) from Michael Azurdia that his younger brother Tony had died during the afternoon. He has been ill for very many months with a variety of blood problems, involving regular day and stays in hospital for transfusions of blood and platelets. Despite all of this he remained cheerful and upbeat. Tony was one of my best friends from school days and I was a regular visitor to the family home in Grassendale. I played for his wedding and we have kept in touch over the years, despite his living in Sandhurst. His wife, Lindy, has been a tower of strength and they have a grown up family and grandchildren. Tony had been a staunch member of the Catenians and was a former Provincial President of Province 8 of the Association. The last occasion we met was at Westminster Cathedral when the Catenians were attending the Solemn Mass, at which I was involved in presenting a cheque for the cathedral on behalf of the Friends of Cathedral Music, a pure coincidence, neither of us expecting to meet !

Mersey Tunnel 10K Race
On Sunday 10 June, Old Edwardians James Riley (1993-2000) (Liverpool Harriers) and Maria Barrett (1995-2002) triumphed at the annual Mersey Tunnel 10k race. James was first across the finish line at New Brighton Promenade in 31min 28sec, and Maria was the first female to finish with a time of 35min 49sec. The event saw more than 2,600 participants undertake the challenge to run from the 6.2mile course from Pall Mall in Liverpool City Centre to New Brighton.
Well done to 2,648 runners who took part and their many sponsors.

Junior Bantams 1943-44
Frank McGrail OE 1942-46 identified a few surnames for this photo. He had also added last two missing names for a 2011 Dinner photo, table 15, being himself and his brother. I sent out to a number of contacts in the 1940-50 eras and have had great response, mainly from Jim Dillon who has filled in most of the gaps. It also stimulated other memories from a number of years. Pity the photo is not better and maybe someone can send in an improved one!

EXHIBITION Art lovers have particular reason to visit the Metropolitan Cathedral Liverpool this month when an exhibition of paintings of sacred icons goes on display.
Pelikons is an exhibition of richly coloured panels by the Southport artist John Hart which will be displayed in the West Apse for three weeks from Sat. 27 Aug. John Hart, a former St. Edwards College pupil and one-time senior art adviser for Liverpool Education Authority, developed the collection of over 60 panels out of 150 pen-work vignettes of the triple cycle of the Sunday liturgy produced for the newsletter of his parish, St Marie on the Sands. He describes this work as his response to the sidelining of Christianity in our society and the attacks it faces in the media. Open day from 8am  6pm.

Very sorry indeed to report recent death (31st May) of John in Minnesota,USA. Edwardian 1949-1956.Tremendous contributor to life, particularly (all) sports. Univ.Liverpool 1st class Hons.Marine engineering. Rugby++; UAU; and went on to captain and become President of Northern and Northumberland and played against Wilson Whinneray's All Blacks. After Parson's Marine Turbines closed he emigrated to The States.We have kept in regular contact ever since,the more so since e--mail. He has been over several times particularly for the Grand National and we had lunch together in April. Throughout life he stuck true to his Faith so hopefully a big RIP.

The College is sad to announce that Brother Ligouri Gillespie, Old Edwardian and Former Headmaster of St Edwards College, died in Wythenshawe Hospital on Wednesday 18 May 2011. Brother Gillespie was born in 1935: he was educated at St Edwards College, St Catherines College Cambridge - where he gained an MA in History, and was awarded a PhD from Trinity College Dublin. He was Headmaster of St Edwards College from 1979 to 1984 and Provincial of the Christian Brothers from 1984 to 1991. He then worked extensively in Sierra Leone and Zambia. He was one of the Colleges most distinguished alumni and had a significant impact on the lives of many around the world.

A message from Mr T Sweeney, Chairman of Governors and Mr J E Waszek, Principal:
We are pleased to inform you that last Thursday, 28 April 2011, the Department for Education confirmed that St Edwards College could convert to become an Academy with effect from Sunday 1 May 2011. Since the founding of the Catholic Institute in Hope Street in 1853, the College has undergone many changes in status. Each of these has added to the richness of experience enjoyed by our pupils and we are confident that this conversion to Academy status will enable the College to go from strength to strength. The name of the College is unchanged; although as a legal entity will be known as St Edwards College, Edmund Rice Academy Trust. We would like to confirm there will be no changes to the Admission arrangements, or to the membership of the Governing Body. We would like to thank the many parents who have supported the Governing Body during the conversion process.

More magazines now added to complete the 80's section, some of the photos in the later ones are poor quality but plenty to read. This brings total to over 180. Overall we need a few gaps filling so please let me know if you can help.

After finding an entry in a 1930's magazine on our Magazines CD referring to a family wedding Joe Chamberlain has put out this appeal.
For the purposes of family tree research, I would like to make (or re-make) e-mail contact with my OE second-cousins Philip (1949-1956?) and Stephen Keating (1953-1960), Peter Hill (1956-1963) and Terry Murphy (1958-1965) all, like me (1950-1957) and my brother Nick (1954-1961), great-grandsons of Winifred and John Chamberlain of Ormskirk.

Reunion Dinner was Friday 15th October 2010 and St Edwards Mass was on Sunday 17th October at the Cathedral. (See college web site for details.)

The dinner was another successful event and enjoyed by all. I hope to have some photographs on the site in next few days.
We had available at the dinner disks with all the college magazines we have been able to trace. 11 from 1855-1856 and 126 from 1908 to 1984.
They proved so popular that we sold out, profits from the sale will go to charity nominated by the college.

We have had an appeal/update from Mark Kirwan in connection with his entry from January
"Mark Kirwan is very pleased with the comments received following his queries published 14th January 2010 about the school chant, or cry, and the successes in the Liverpool Schools Football Shield. He still has a problem with the story of the Junior Shield won in 1921 when they beat Liverpool Institute. We want to hear from anyone who has a medal for this success in their family archives and, in particular, the name of the person who received it."

30 June 2010 - There is also the sad news of the death of Jim Murray at the end of April who was an old boy of St Teresas and St Edwards (1945-50). Jim was a headteacher in Skelmersdale and Maghull. In his early career he taught in the centre of Liverpool.

29 June 2010 - Bob Burns OE 1944-51, was the visionary publican who set up Flanagans Apple on Mathew Street, which was the UKs first Irish themed pub. He died on June 16 in Aintree hospital after getting a chest infection. He leaves behind his wife Joan. Bob passed away last week aged 77 after a short illness. His funeral will take place at 11am 29th June at St Pauls Church in West Derby, followed by an internment at the Yew Tree Cemetery.

I was in the first rugby team from 1947 to 1953 but I did not see my name on any of your lists. Nor did I see any other Moorheads  I was the first, followed by my brothers Peter, Paul and Bernard (twins). Several younger cousins were also pupils. It was interesting to see how much the school changed, there were parties, reunions and everyone looked very prosperous and not at like it was in 1943. We had extra milk and orange juice. Some of the brothers were much more at home in Gaelic than English. What your name is? I was once asked.

I left at the end of the 1956 school year. My first cousin Brian Butchard was in the same year as me but we lost contact some time before I emigrated to Australia in 1965. Do you have any record of him through the old boys network?
